Today’s Fossil Friday may not look like a fossil, but we promise it is! It’s Coprolite, better known as fossilized prehistoric animal droppings. Coprolite is formed by the conversion of organic materials into iron carbonate over a period of thousands of years, retaining the exact shape of the animal dung. The “rusted” color is caused by the iron oxidation of the stones.
The coprolite available in The Ancient Fossil Shop at Nature’s Art Village was found in Washington and Utah and is believed to have come from prehistoric small lizards, inland turtles and even some dinosaurs!
The Ancient Fossil Shop inside The Shops at Nature’s Art Village features a collection of rough and polished coprolite from a variety of prehistoric animals. Corpolite is truly a unique fossil and an essential piece for any serious fossil collection. To see our full selection visit The Shops at Nature’s Art Village on Route 85 in Montville, Connecticut.
Check back next week for a new Fossil Friday!
