Today’s Mineral Monday from The A to Z Mineral Shop at Nature’s Art Village is obsidian! Obsidian, commonly referred to as “volcanic glass”, is created by silica-rich lava being exposed to air. The exposure causes a rapid cooling, too fast to form crystals, resulting in a natural black glass. Black obsidian has been used for ages to create tools because of its impressive strength and natural sharp edges. Its beauty has made it a common stone used in Snowflake Obsidian - Obsidian - Mineral Mondayadornments, carvings and sculptures for centuries. Tiny inclusions within the stone can create beautiful “sheen” (or reflection) in a large array of colors. This creates snowflake, rainbow, mahogany and other varieties of obsidian. Obsidian can be found throughout the world, typically in areas with active (or previously active) volcanoes, including the western United States.

Metaphysically, obsidian is considered a powerful protective stone, eliminating all negative energies and influences around the wearer. By cleansing all around it, it clears feelings of fear, anger, greed and resentment and opens up the mind to inner visions while clearing up causes for disease. Obsidian is also said to provide strength in times of need, vitality and fulfillment to aspirations & relieve tension.

Rainbow Obsidian: Inclusions within the obsidian can cause a prismatic effect, breaking light down to produce beautiful rainbow coloring. This rainbow obsidian is said to help bring light and love to one’s life.

MSH Rose Quartz Obsidianite 2Mount St. Helens Obsidianite (Helenite): Obsidianite, also known as Helenite, was created from the volcanic ash found after the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Skamania County, Washington. This gemstone is made by heating volcanic ash at a very high temperature to create a compound. The combination of silica, aluminum, iron and trace amounts of a variety of elements creates these beautiful and unique gemstones. Nature’s Art Village has Twilight Obsidianite (blue), Emerald Obsidianite (green) and Rose Quartz Obsidianite (pink) in the Artistic Jewelry Shop.

The Shops at Nature’s Art Village have an immense selection of obsidian including rainbow, snowflake, mahogany, obsidianite and other varieties with unique inclusions. The Shops also feature obsidian beads, jewelry, sculptures, pyramids, spheres and more. To see our full selection of obsidian, and many more unique gems & minerals, visit The Shops at Nature’s Art Village on Route 85 in Montville, Connecticut.
